D.C. closer to a Wegmans deal?

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said Wednesday that he met with representatives from Wegmans while in Las Vegas, the second year in a row he has met with the popular grocer at the annual real estate convention.

Although Gray — whose delegation had 80 meetings during their three-day stint in Vegas — didn’t kiss and tell, he did say he thought they’d made some deals.

“But we won’t talk about those until we have some signatures on the dotted line,” he said.

Wegmans has expressed interest in the city’s big redevelopment plans for the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center Campus and met with city officials at the same convention last year, The Washington Examiner first reported.

Gray, who said he didn’t gamble during his trip, also predicted a lot of development near Eden’s Place near Florida Avenue and said the planned St. Elizabeths Hospital redevelopment was a hot topic among developers.

“I think people were excited to learn about the Coast Guard coming in there with 4,400 employees, which will be a huge customer base,” Gray said.
