White House scolds CNN for banning Conway over ‘credibility’ issues

White House press secretary Sean Spicer blasted CNN on Tuesday for its “insulting” decision to keep Kellyanne Conway off the network on Sunday, noting that she will continue to represent the administration on other stations.

“I think Kellyanne is a very trusted aide of the president and any characterization otherwise is insulting,” Spicer told reporters. “If they choose not to work with someone, that’s up to them.”

“But we’re going to continue to put on our key leaders in this administration, including Kellyanne, that can articulate the president’s policies and agenda,” he added.

CNN has said it kept Conway, a senior adviser to President Trump, off the air on Sunday because of issues with her “credibility.” The decision came soon after Conway was criticized by an array of news outlets for mistakenly claiming that two Iraqi refugees who came to the U.S. were “behind the Bowling Green massacre.” Reporters were quick to point out that such an attack never happened, leading Conway to say she misspoke.

“[Conway] was offered to State of the Union on Sunday by the White House. We passed. Those are the facts,” CNN’s communications arm wrote in a tweet Monday morning.

After the briefing on Tuesday, the network said: “CNN was clear, on the record, about our concerns about Kellyanne Conway’s credibility.”
