Coast Guard Academy’s command master chief abruptly resigns: Report

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s most senior enlisted leader reportedly resigned his position.

Command Master Chief Brett VerHulst stepped down from his role at the academy on Tuesday, according to officials cited by the Navy Times.

No reason for the resignation was provided by Cmdr. David Milne, who is a spokesman for the academy.

“We don’t comment on any personnel actions or internal investigation,” Milne said.

The Coast Guard Academy could not immediately be reached for comment on VerHulst’s resignation.

VerHulst, who remains a master chief in the Coast Guard, is being reassigned to the neighboring Coast Guard Research and Development Center in New London, Connecticut. Master Chief Anthony Schell will serve as interim command master chief until Master Chief Maria D’Angelo arrives in the summer, the report said.

VerHulst assumed his role as command master chief at the academy in August 2017, according to its website. His primary responsibility was advising the academy’s superintendent “on issues and initiatives pertaining to the entire Coast Guard Academy workforce.”
