Republican candidates have closed the gap with their Democratic counterparts in Fox News’ latest congressional generic ballot poll released Sunday.
The Fox News survey found Democratic contenders held a five percentage-point advantage ahead of the 2018 midterms, with 46 percent of voters favoring left-leaning candidates to 41 percent preferring GOP candidates.
A similar poll placed in the field by Fox News in October revealed Democrats enjoyed a 15 percentage-point margin over Republicans (50-35 percent).
Thirty-six percent of voters told researchers in Sunday’s survey that they were more enthusiastic about the November elections compared to previous years.
Among enthused voters, however, 60 percent supported Democratic candidates in comparison to 33 percent who identified with Republicans on the ballot.
While the poll recorded the first time since 2010 that fewer than half of the voters questioned felt “nervous” about the economy, a majority were still not optimistic about the country’s direction.
The survey of 1,014 voters was conducted nationwide using landlines and cellphones between March 18 and March 21. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
