Michael Cohen said that if he could say anything to President Trump, he would tell him to spend less time on Twitter and more time working on bringing the U.S. together.
“Lay off Twitter, run the country the way that we all thought that you would, be able to take the Democrats, Republicans, bring them together and bring the country together instead of dividing the country,” Cohen said when asked by George Stephanopoulos what he would tell Trump if he were there.
In his first public statements since the sentencing, Cohen told ABC that he doesn’t believe the president would heed, or even hear, that advice.
Trump attacked Cohen and his family several times on Twitter after Cohen made a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller.
Cohen plead guilty to making payments on behalf of Trump that he admitted to violate campaign contribution laws because they were made in an attempt to increase Trump’s chances of winning the 2016 presidential election. Trump contests that the contributions were violations of campaign finance law and questions whether they were even campaign contributions.
On Wednesday, Cohen was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison. He will report to prison March 6.
Cohen says when he looks back on his loyalty to Trump in the past decade, he wonders what he was thinking, and tells himself that he knew better than to get involved with a lot of what he did as Trump’s so-called fixer.
“If they [the special counsel] want me [to cooperate], I am here and I am willing to answer whatever additional questions that they may have for me,” Cohen said.
