Sorry, kids: D.C. schools safe from government shutdown

A government shutdown spells big problems for D.C. residents — not least of all the Hollywood film adaptations that will surely hit screens by fall. But the bright spot is that a shutdown would not affect city-run D.C. Public Schools.

“DCPS in its entirety falls within the list of agency functions that may continue without disruption, per the city administrator’s memo,” said Safiya Simmons, a spokeswoman for Acting Chancellor Kaya Henderson.

The only school-related exception to the memo is the D.C. school board, which is operated not by DCPS, but by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education.

“Hence, school remains in session,” Simmons said.
