Clinton wins S.C. black vote by hefty margin

As expected, Hillary Clinton won the South Carolina primary with massive support from black voters, exit polling found.

Clinton won black voters by 72 percentage points over her opponent Bernie Sanders.

Blacks made up 61 percent of voters on primary day, up from 2008 when Barack Obama won South Carolina on the strength of the black vote. Hispanics made up 2 percent of primary voters, the poll showed.

Clinton also won black men by 82 percent to 18 percent and black women 89 percent to 11 percent.

On the question of who can handle race relations better, about 50 percent of those polled said both of them and 32 percent said only Clinton.

About 45 percent of voters said that race relations have gotten worse over the past year. Clinton won those voters by 64 percent to 36 percent.

Exit polls showed the massive amount of ground that Sanders has to make up if he wants to make any inroads with the key Democratic constituency.

The results came after Clinton made a big push to get out the black vote in South Carolina. Important surrogates for Clinton included five mothers whose children were the victims of violence, including the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Sandra Bland.
