The Redskins claimed Thaddeus Gibson off waivers, adding yet another young linebacker with athleticism. Gibson had been waived by San Francisco earlier this week.
Gibson, a fourth-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2010, spent part of last year on the Steelers’ practice squad until the Niners signed him. The Redskins reportedly cut linebacker Obi Ezeh, according to Scout.com. Chicago and Pittsburgh also put in claims on Gibson, according to the NFL Network.
Last summer, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said after a strong day of camp by Gibson, “If you are a linebacker and you are shy, you usually have a problem, and I don’t think he has that problem.”
Gibson left Ohio State after his junior year, mainly for family reasons.
Here’s a scouting report on Gibson. And another one.
The Redskins drafted Ryan Kerrigan (first round) and Markus White (seventh round), converting them from end to linebacker. Brian Orakpo is in his third season and Rob Jackson, another backup, is in his fourth season.
