Wheaton’s Lazear has made his choice

Wheaton High senior Pat Lazear, ranked one of the top five high school football prospects in Maryland, has selected a college, according to his father. But the choice will not be revealed to the media.

According to Harry Lazear, his son has chosen a school whose interest didn’t waver after his arrest for armed robbery. Lazear pled guilty to the robbery of a Bethesda Smoothie King and served 10 days in prison in December.

“His letter of intent is sitting here on the table and it’s waiting to be signed,” said Harry Lazear. “We’re holding off announcing it. We’re not going to have any kind of ceremony.”

Lazear, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker and All-Examiner choice at fullback, had received interest from Nebraska, Ohio State, West Virginia, Alabama and Maryland. After his arrest many ceased their recruitment, including Maryland.

“That was the most disappointing one,” said Harry Lazear. “Maryland never called. They never acknowledged him. Some of the other recruiters at least had the courage to tell us what was going on.”

According to Harry Lazear, his son hopes to enroll in June. Working with one of the area’s premier strength trainers, Jason Hadeed, Lazear works out five days a week.

Lazear started three seasons at Whitman High, then was re-assigned to Wheaton for his senior year after his arrest. Lazear’s older brother, Tyler, starts at quarterback for Division II Shepherd University.

“Pat’s doing great,” said Harry Lazear. “He’s working out, doing his community service. He just wants to get far away from Montgomery County, far away from Maryland, and get on with his life.”
