Trump approval rating hits new low in Marist poll

President Trump’s approval rating hit its lowest point since he assumed the presidency, with 35 percent of Americans approving of the job Trump is doing, according to a new poll.

The new NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist poll found 55 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Trump is doing, which is the highest negative rating he’s received as president.

Though Trump remains popular among his base, his approval rating among strong Republicans decreased from 91 percent in June to 79 percent in August.

“While Republicans are still largely in Trump’s corner, the cautionary tale for the president lies in the softening of support at his base,” Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “Since his numbers among Democrats and independents are weak, a crack among his most ardent supporters is something Trump can ill afford.”

In addition to his low approval rating, the majority of Americans have a negative view of Trump.

The poll found 60 percent of voters view Trump unfavorably — his highest level of unpopularity since January — and 34 percent have a favorable view of the president.

Sixty percent of Americans also do not feel Trump is honest and trustworthy, compared to 37 percent who believe Trump.

Additionally, 64 percent of Americans said they are embarrassed by the president’s recent behavior. Just 29 percent of those polled are proud of how Trump behaves.

The NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist poll surveyed 1,009 adults from Aug. 8 to Aug. 12 on either a landline or cellphone.
