American Crossroads has just released an anti-Obama advertisement that seems geared toward shifting focus back to Obama’s “you didn’t build that” remark in July. And while it’s important to remind Americans that Obama’s gaffe was telling of his true feelings about government involvement in the lives of successful Americans, the small business ad will likely be entirely overshadowed by Mitt Romney’s late-night press conference regarding his 47 percent comment.
While the ad does not directly reference Obama’s comment, it uses language that cannot be construed as coincidental. “Small businesses like ours are what have driven this country and President Obama just doesn’t seem to understand that,” small business owner Sherry Wuebben says in the ad.
“Obama has made a lot of bad decisions,” businessman Bill Schams remarks in the ad. “He treats us like we are his enemy.” The complaints from the two individuals are combined with quotes from news stories within the past year, revealing how Obama’s policies have hurt small businesses.
The 30-second advertisement is effective at conveying its point, but will most likely detract little from the recently-surfaced remarks Romney made at a private fundraiser on May 17. The video from the event, which was leaked to Mother Jones magazine, has created such a media whirlwind that few will likely notice another television commercial in the already advertisement-saturated 2012 campaign, much less one that references such an outdated, but important Obama statement.
