Nadler: Republicans can either agree to ‘fair’ impeachment trial with witnesses or be ‘part of the cover-up’

Rep. Jerry Nadler panned the idea of having no witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump.

“In any trial, all relevant witnesses must be heard,” the House Judiciary Committee chairman said Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation. “This whole controversy about whether there should be witnesses is really a question of, does the Senate want to have a fair trial, or are they part of the cover-up of the president?”

He added, “Any Republican senator who says there should be no witnesses, or even that witnesses should be negotiated, is part of the cover-up.”

Nadler, 72, also dismissed the thought of having Hunter Biden, who served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company while his father was leading foreign policy in the region as vice president, testify.

“Their asking for Hunter Biden is just more of a smear of Hunter Biden that the president was trying to get the Ukraine to do,” he said.

Republicans have threatened to bring in Biden as a witness if Democrats try to call their own witnesses during the Senate trial slated to start Tuesday.

Sen. Ted Cruz said Sunday that he expects the Trump trial to take up to eight weeks if witnesses are called. Sen. Lindsey Graham also weighed in Sunday, saying the Senate Republicans will hold a full trial because they do not have the votes to dismiss the impeachment articles immediately.
