Driver convicted of manslaughter in fatal collision

The West Virginia man involved in a fatal collision this past summer in western Howard County was convicted Tuesday of negligent manslaughter, according to the Howard State’s Attorney’s Office.

Joel Wareham, 22, entered an Alford plea to the charge, which allowed him to maintain innocence while conceding that enough evidence exists to convict him in the Aug. 14 collision on Frederick Road in Lisbon.

Wareham was impaired by alcohol and speeding when his 2006 BMW crossed the double-yellow line and struck a 2001 Ford Explorer, the prosecutor said.

The driver of the Ford, Milton Bowens Sr., 64, of Mount Airy, died.

Wareham’s sentencing is scheduled for April 16 before Howard Circuit Judge Richard Bernhardt.

The prosecutor plans to recommend a sentence of 18 months. – Carolyn Peirce

Cecil judge acquits man accused of injuring infant

ELKTON – A Cecil County judge acquitted a man accused of causing severe injuries to an 8-month-old baby.

Circuit Judge Dexter Thompson said this week there was no definitive medical testimony that explained how the infant suffered the injuries that caused his brain damage.

Aaron Murray, 26, of Millersville, Pa., was found not guilty on all counts — including child abuse resulting in severe injury.

Christian Darling was injured in May 2006 at Murray’s former house in North East. The boy was the child of Murray’s then-girlfriend.

State medical experts said the baby’s injuries were consistent with shaking and blunt force trauma, but other possibilities could not be ruled out.

Murray maintained the baby fell off a bed. – AP
