Tips for silencing a noisy alarm

It always seems to happen just as you relax on a warm spring day.

A car alarm goes off seemingly forever. The only thing perhaps more exasperating than having quiet shattered by a nonstop alarm is owning the car in which you can’t shut down the alarm.

Consider some of these thoughts about car alarms and how to ensure you can turn yours off. The information is offered from approved automotive repair specialists Ed Kriston and Jeff Boone, who work out of the Towson office of AAA Mid-Atlantic headquartered in Wilmington, Del.

» Check for user error. Sometimes an alarm goes off because a sensor isn?t set correctly. Consult your owner?s manual. If the alarm was not factory installed, check the directions from the installer.

» Try putting your key in the door and turning the door lock. Your best bet may be to do that on the passenger?s side door. That will manually override some alarms.

» Put the key in the ignition and turn the car on. That will sometimes override the alarm.

» Look for a toggle button or switch near the kick panel. Push that.

» Look for the alarm’s fuse. It may be located below the steering wheel to the left. If the alarm was installed after the car left the factory, the alarm may be under the hood.

» As a last resort, you may pull the fuse. If the alarm still sounds, replace the fuse and try another. Consult the owner?s manual before doing so and use caution.
