Summer gets jazzed up at Druid Hill Park

Summer is the quintessential season for outdoor concerts. And the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks is getting in on the fun.

Jazzy Sundays, a program of the department?s Bureau of Music, is the city?s new summer concert series. One Sunday per month, a free concert will be offered to Baltimore City residents.

The concerts began last year, in an attempt to attract more people to Druid Hill Park.

“The park looks great,” said Portia Harris, associate director of Baltimore?s Department of Recreation and Parks. “We thought that Jazzy Sundays would be just another way for people to come and enjoy Druid Hill.”

“Everyone is invited to historic Druid Hill Park to play tennis or softball, jog or bike around the reservoir, tour park treasures such as the Conservatory, have a picnic and watch the sunset, while listening to the smooth jazz,” said Kia McCleod, director of the marketing and media relations office at Recreation and Parks.

Last year, the smooth jazz and R&B concerts drew big crowds.

“It?s a great commentary on the [community?s] interest in Druid Hill Park,” Harris said, adding that many folks bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. “Everyone really makes it a nice evening.”

On July 8, the Rush Hour Band will perform.

“They are great, it?s a high energy R&B act that really has a wide appeal,” Harris said. “It?s some good listening.”

Other featured performers this summer will include Corinthia Cromwell and the Evolution Band, the Municipal Band, Baltimore’s Big Band, Final Touch and more.

“We encourage everyone to come and enjoy the scenery in Druid Hill Park while listening to the R&B sounds of the artists who take pride in the Jazzy Sunday events,” Harris said. “It?s a nice relaxing evening here in the park.”
