Chuck Grassley backs ‘permanent’ Supreme Court livestream

A historic day at the country’s highest court of law is being hailed by a top Republican senator who believes virtually streaming cases could provide greater transparency to the people.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley tweeted his support for the Supreme Court after the chamber’s session was teleconferenced online for the first time ever.

“2day Supreme Court oral arguments avail for 1st time by livestream bc of the virus,” Grassley said on Monday. “Ive been longtime advocate for cameras in the courtroom/hv sent letters to hv audio of arguments available This increased transparency shld b permanent The ppl’s biz ought 2b public!”

Grassley is the senior-most Republican in the Senate. He was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee from January 2015 to early 2019.

The high court has not heard arguments since March and adopted the new measures that would adhere to social distancing guidelines meant to stem the spread of the coronavirus. The move provided unprecedented access to people tuning in from all over the world.

The Supreme Court, which features six members who are 65 or older, will hear arguments for a flurry of cases within the month, including one involving President Trump’s financial records.
