Patriots centered for opener

Could it be that George Mason has finally ascended from lowly mid-major status to bona fide power? For the first time since 1996, the Patriots willbegin the season with three straight home games.

“It feels like we’re Duke,” said guard Folarin Campbell, referring to last year’s Blue Devils, who played 12 of their first 15 games at Cameron Indoor Stadium — the other three were at neutral sites.

Vermont’s visit Friday will be just second time in head coach Jim Larranaga’s 11 seasons with George Mason that he’s opened the year at Patriot Center.

“That means our program is getting better,” said forward Will Thomas. “I think it’s a great accomplishment.”

Thomas and Campbell should know. The two seniors have already accomplished much in their first three years, especially storied run to the 2006 Final Four. But last season was a disappointing roller coaster in which George Mason struggled to put together consecutive victories before a compelling four-game run to the Colonial Athletic Association tournament final.

“We know what this team’s capable of doing,” said Thomas. “We just need to be consistent for the entire season instead of just four games.”

That streak, three straight wins and a heartbreaking loss to Virginia Commonwealth, has carried over to serve as inspiration this fall.

“I can tell just in practice,” he said, “How we’re playing, the coaches are motivated and how the players are motivated. It’s going to carry over to the game.”

The Patriots will be without senior forward Darryl Monroe (toe) tomorrow, but Campbell and Thomas headline a roster that includes seven other returners and a talented recruiting class including three Washington-area players. The home games will allow the Patriots’ freshman to get comfortable while building chemistry on a team that doesn’t fear any opponent.

“I’ve played against everybody, the top players in the nation,” said Campbell. “Two years ago with Rudy Gay, Shannon Brown, who are all in the NBA now. I feel comfortable having to guard them. We’veplayed in big games, and we lost some and won some. Just playing in them and competing, I feel comfortable anywhere.”
