McCain: Americans ‘stupid’ enough to go to North Korea should sign a waiver with the US government

Sen. John McCain said Tuesday that Americans who are “stupid” enough to travel to North Korea should be required to sign a waiver that would absolve the U.S. government from blame if the travelers suffer harm while there.

“There should at least be a form for them to fill out that says, ‘If I go to North Korea, I understand I am taking a great risk, and I do not hold the American government responsible,” McCain said according to the Associated Press.

McCain also added that, “If people are that stupid they still want to go to that country, then at least they assume the responsibility for their welfare.”

The Arizona senator’s comments come after the family of Otto Warmbier announced his death on Monday. Warmbier was a U.S. college student who was arrested in North Korea and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor, but returned home after 17 months in a coma.

McCain said Monday that Warmbier had been “murdered by the Kim Jung Un regime.”
