Lori Vallow sentencing: ‘Cult mom’ to serve life in prison for murdering her two children

Lori Vallow, known as the notorious “cult mom,” was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for murdering her two children nearly four years ago.

The case drew national attention after Joshua “JJ” Vallow and Tylee Ryan disappeared in November 2019. Convicted in May, Vallow was also found guilty of conspiring to murder Tammy Daybell, her fifth and current husband’s ex-wife. Vallow is known for her obsession with doomsday prophecies.

Vallow received multiple life sentences without parole for her crimes as ordered by Idaho Judge Steven W. Boyce, NBC News reported. She murdered her son and daughter on the belief that they became “zombies” after evil spirits possessed their souls.

Before her sentencing, Vallow said Joshua and Tylee were happy after their deaths.

“Jesus knows me and Jesus understands me,” she said. “I mourn with all of you who mourn my children and Tammy. Jesus Christ knows the truth of what happened here, Jesus Christ knows no one was murdered in this case. Accidental deaths happen, suicides happen, fatal side effects from medications happen.”

Initially, Daybell was thought to have died of natural causes in October 2019. However, the autopsy of her remains proved her death was a homicide.

Weeks later, Vallow married Chad Daybell, who has yet to be convicted as a co-conspirator in the case. His trial is set for April 1, 2024.

Boyce ruled Vallow should serve consecutive life sentences for committing the murders. According to the district judge, the “cult” mother has not “shown any remorse” nor “done anything to seek leniency from this court.”
