De Rosario named MLS player of the week for third time in eight weeks

Dwayne De Rosario was named MLS player of the week for the third time in eight weeks on Monday, but really, was there even a question. It was done deal before 31 minutes had elapsed in D.C. United’s 4-1 win over Real Salt Lake, by which time De Rosario had three exquisite goals and an even better assist.

There are a couple of comments from De Rosario that didn’t get fully fleshed out in my game story on Saturday, both is contractual status and his thoughts on the penalty kick call against Chivas last week. Here’s what he said:

On his contract and what he believes his value is: “At the end of the day, all I can do is just go out there and give 100 percent and continue to play for my teammates, continue to play for the fans, and continue playing for the club. I think that’s what I’ve been doing for my whole career. Obviously, it comes a time when you’ve got to put your foot down, which I did, but when you’re asked to step up and do a job, you can’t bitch and moan. You’ve still got to go out and do the work, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

On the call vs. Chivas, and whether he should’ve been punished for embellishment: “I felt a nudge, and it was late in the game, 90th minute, and any little nudge in the 90th minute, when you’re tired, when your body’s fatigued, you’re going to go down. The ref made the decision to call it, and that’s what it was.”
