Virginia is responding to the age-old question from adolescent back-seat drivers, “Are we there yet?”
The state Department of Transportation will spend $400,000 on new electronic signs to inform motorists how close they are to the beach.
Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Monday the state will install the signs Wednesday in six spots around the Hampton Roads area to tell people the fastest route to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront or North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
The electronic signs will update in real time and display how many minutes away drivers are from the two summer hot spots. Similar signs are already in place on Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia that show drive times to various points in the region.
“This system will help travelers by providing them with the most reliable travel time information available and where possible, encourage them to use alternate routes that are less congested,” McDonnell said.
Rest stops in Fredericksburg, Skippers and New Kent County will display similar information.
