The National Capital Planning Commission is sponsoring a design competition for a temporary commemorative work to be built at the Federal Triangle.
The Beyond Granite competition is the commission’s first step in an experiment to break D.C.’s tradition of using public land permanently for fixtures, instead constructing ones that can later be taken down. The work will be built in the Ariel Rios Federal Building’s hemicycle, between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues and remain there for one year.
The theme for the competition is Earth Day.
A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) will be posted soon on https://www.fbo.gov/, the government’s contract opportunity website. Artists and/or professional designers must submit their proposals to the commission by Feb. 28. An evaluation board will then choose teams to develop more detailed proposals.
The winner will be selected this summer and could be contracted to install their piece.
