Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is “uniquely qualified” to win the White House for his Republican Party in 2016, Rubio told donors Monday.
The Senate freshman is expected to announce his candidacy at a gala event at Miami’s Freedom Tower on Monday evening.
In a conference call Monday morning, Rubio, 43, said freshly declared Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton “is a leader from yesterday,” according to a report from the Associated Press. The former first lady, Obama administration secretary of state and U.S. senator from New York State announced her own presidential candidacy on the Democratic line Sunday. Clinton sought the Democratic nomination without success in 2008.
Rubio is also scheduled to defend his senate seat in the Sunshine State in next year’s general election. The risk of opening a senate race weighs heavily on Republicans, whose senate majority of 54 seats (to 44 Democratic and two independent seats) is fragile.
