‘The legal wedding was on the Saturday’: Archbishop who married Prince Harry and Meghan Markle denies early nuptials

The officiant who married Prince Harry and Meghan Markle insists the two royals entered the bonds of marriage during their regal May 2018 ceremony.

Earlier this month, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey for CBS, Markle claimed that she and the duke were married by the Archbishop of Canterbury three days before the ceremony. However, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby told Italian newspaper La Repubblica that the royal wedding, which took place in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, was the legal ceremony.

“If any of you ever talk to a priest, you expect them to keep that talk confidential. It doesn’t matter who I’m talking to,” he said when asked if he married the couple prior to the wedding.

“I had a number of private and pastoral meetings with the duke and duchess before the wedding,” the archbishop continued. “The legal wedding was on the Saturday. I signed the wedding certificate, which is a legal document, and I would have committed a serious criminal offense if I signed it knowing it was false. So you can make what you like about it. But the legal wedding was on the Saturday. But I won’t say what happened at any other meetings.”

“No one knows that,” she said. “But we called the archbishop, and we just said, ‘Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us. So, like, the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”

The couple’s CBS interview caused a stir on social media after Markle said someone in the royal family expressed concern over “how dark” the skin of their son, Archie, would be.

The royal family responded to Markle’s claim, saying, “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately,” continuing, “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Markle also revealed that she had suicidal thoughts during her time as a working royal.

Last month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they would not return as working royals, instead deciding to continue to reside in California.
