Conservative speaker Ben Shapiro told The Hollywood Reporter that he will appear before a congressional hearing called Challenges to Freedom of Speech on College Campuses on July 27.
Shapiro will be joined by comedian Adam Carolla, who worked with radio host Dennis Prager to make a documentary about political correctness on college campuses called “No Safe Spaces,” and former ACLU president and founder of Feminists for Free Expression, Nadine Strossen.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that it had learned from insiders that Carolla will testify for around two hours before two subcommittees of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Subcommittee on Health Care, Benefits and Administrative Rules and the Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Affairs.
“I’m looking forward to informing Congress of the challenges of free speech at colleges, especially from Democrats,” Shapiro said to the Hollywood Reporter. “I’ll be curious to see if any Democrats show up at the hearing and, if they do, if they’ll take an adversarial position or present a united front.”
Free speech at college campuses has become a hot topic in politics after scheduled appearances by conservative speakers like Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter sparked protests at the University of California, Berkeley, due to the speakers’ messages.
The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform would not comment on the hearing and had not issued any statements on it.
