A reporter at a press conference hosted by Donald Trump on Tuesday in New York asked the candidate to weigh in on the controversy over a gorilla who was shot and killed at a zoo after a young boy fell into the habitat.
Yahoo News reporter Hunter Walker claimed credit on Twitter for the question.
“I just asked Trump about Harambe the gorilla,” Walker said. “He clearly thought about this issue extensively. Says zoo likely made right choice.”
Reaction from his media colleagues was swift and mocking.
“Whoever asked about the gorilla should meet the same fate as the gorilla,” said Wall Street Journal reporter Reid Epstein on Twitter.
“Who the hell asked Trump about the f’ing gorilla?” tweeted Politico reporter Ben White. “Now THAT is loser reporting.”
The gorilla, named Harambe, was shot and killed at a zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Saturday after a small child fell into its enclosed area. The gorilla was deemed a threat to the child and was seen dragging him through the pen.
“I don’t think they had a choice,” Trump said of the situation. “It’s too bad there wasn’t another way.”
