Redskins not scoring a lot but it’s been enough so far
The Redskins toyed with Cleveland in the second half Sunday, running the ball nearly two-thirds of the time. But they only used three different running plays, all going to the outside. It didn’t matter. They managed 107 yards on those 16 carries.

“We were basically saying, ‘Stop us,’” Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said, “and they couldn’t.”
They did when it came to the end zone. In the past two games, Washington has averaged 359 1/2 yards per game, including 187 on the ground. But the Redskins (5-2) have only scored 31 points, seven coming on a three-yard drive vs. St. Louis, and easily could have lost twice. They’re seventh in total offense, but 23rd in points.
“It would have been nice to score 40 points,” Cooley said. “But we’re making smart plays and playing solid, hard-nosed football and it’s winning us games.”
Still, they’d like more. Here’s why they haven’t:
LONG DRIVES » Washington has started just 10 drives in opponents’ territory.
“It’s hard to go the whole field against a tough defense,” Cooley said.
The Redskins have scored every time they’ve started on the opponents’ side, except on the two occasions they ran out the clock at the end of a win.
The defense hasn’t helped, only forcing eight turnovers and just one in the past two games. Also, the Redskins have started one drive on the other side of the 50 after a kick return and two after punt returns — one was a fair catch; the other was the result of a return plus a 15-yard penalty.
PASSING GAME » The Redskins rank third rushing the ball and 19th in passing. But consider this: of the top 10 teams rushing the ball eight rank 15th or lower in scoring. Of the top 10 in passing, six reside in the top 10. That’s not to suggest the Redskins must pass more; but an offshoot of the emphasis on the run are fewer big plays and scoring chances. It’s the way their games have evolved.
Also, the real culprit against St. Louis was three turnovers.
“It’s not something we need to worry about,” receiver Antwaan Randle El said. “If we’ve got the running game going, we’re going to stick with it.”
