‘Looking forward to getting behind the wheel’: NASCAR’s Ryan Newman updates fans after hospital release

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman said he will race again after he was hospitalized for a fiery crash during the last lap of the Daytona 500.

During a Sunday press conference, Roush Fenway Racing President Steve Newmark read a statement from the No. 6 driver. Newman, 42, was hospitalized in serious condition last week when his car flipped several times during the race.

Newman, who spent 42 hours hospitalized in Florida after the crash, shared that he suffered a head injury but no internal damage or broken bones. He thanked God for his recovery and NASCAR fans for the outpouring of support.

“We always say that the NASCAR community is one big family, and never has that been more evident to me than after seeing this family rally together and provide the comfort and support that has been shown to my family and me over the past few days,” Newman said.

“I was fortunate to avoid any internal organ damage or broken bones,” he continued. “I did sustain a head injury for which I’m currently being treated. The doctors have been pleased with my progression over the last few days.”

He added, “I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel and battling for another race win.”

After the crash, President Trump, who stopped by the track a day prior to the crash, expressed his support for Newman.

“Praying for Ryan Newman, a great and brave @NASCAR driver! #PrayingForRyan,” Trump wrote.

Newman is in his 19th season with NASCAR and won the Daytona 500 in 2008. He is also the winner of 18 Cup Series.
