A quick glance through the Maryland?s women?s basketball record book is all that?s needed to find Shay Doron?s name.
The senior guard will finish her career as one of the most prolific offensive threats in Maryland history, having recently scored her 1,500th career point in the Terps? 99-43 win over George Mason Nov. 12. Doron is now fifth on the Terps? all-time scoring list with 1,588 points following her 23-point performance Saturday in Maryland?s 110-79 victory over Mississippi in the Junkanoo Jam championship game in the Bahamas.
Doron is now 340 points away from surpassing Vicky Bullett?s all-time school record of 1,928 career points.
However, Doron couldn?t tell you where she currently ranks on any all-time lists. The only numbers that matter to her are the final score at the end of a game and her team?s win-loss record.
Probably no current member on the Maryland roster appreciated last season?s national title run more than Doron. The 5-foot-9 Israeli native was coach Brenda Frese?s first recruit and helped set the foundation for the Terps? current success.
“I?m glad I took a leap of faith and got to be here not only through the rebuilding process, but was also able to reap all the benefits of the recruiting and the hard work that has gone on here,” Doron said. “It makes it that much more special to me. From day one when we were picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in the ACC, my goal has always beento win the ACC championship and the NCAA championship ? something I knew was possible here.”
Since arriving at Maryland in 2003, Doron has been considered one of the elite players in the Atlantic Coast Conference, having become on the second player in school history to earn all-ACC honors three times after making the second-team last season.
She also introduced herself to the Terps fans by tying an NCAA record with 23 made free throws in her first collegiate appearance Nov. 21, 2003 against Coppin State. She is currently leading the Terps (7-0) in scoring at 15.7 points per game.
“From day one, she?s been the cornerstone and foundation of this program,” Frese said. “And all she?s done since then is help turn this program into a national power. She?s a winner and a competitor and will do anything it takes in order to makes this program successful.”
