Low-flying plane over Manhattan turns out to be Secret Service

People in Manhattan were caught off guard Tuesday afternoon when a military plane was seen circling over midtown.

The C-130 propeller plane turned out to be conducting aerial mapping of the peninsula for the U.S. Secret Service, according reports Tuesday evening.

While officials have not linked the request to President-elect Trump, who resides at Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan, the operation was likely connected to the soon-to-be first family. Trump’s wife and son, Melania and Barron, will remain in New York through the school year before joining the president in Washington.

Initially, the New York Police Department tweeted it was unaware of any training operation in the vicinity, prompting some New Yorkers to worry that 15 years after the World Trade Centers were attacked, something similar could be about to take place.

A Federal Aviation Administration official told Business Insider the plane was “conducting authorized flights over New York City in coordination with FAA air traffic control.”
