The latest piece in a large-scale plan to redevelop Georgia Avenue in the District also includes a major rennovation of a nearby community recreation center, planners told D.C.’s zoning commission. The commission voted unanimously Thursday night to approve the project’s zoning in the Petworth area.
Officials from Neighborhood Development Co., which is headquarted near the Petworth Metro station, said the community had requested the developer contribute toward a major public amenity as the company plans to raze a small shopping center to build a residential high rise with ground floor retail.
Neighborhood Development chose nearby Parkview Recreation Center.
“It’s compeletey substandard and the community thought it would be great addition,” Adrian Washington, head of Neighborhood Development, told the commission. “We have pledged to do a complete renovation and whatever it takes to make this a first-class facility for the community.”
