A student survivor of the Feb. 14 shooting at a Florida high school said Monday that the Broward County Sheriff’s Office “dropped the ball” by failing to act on tips about shooter Nikolas Cruz, and by failing to enter the building as the shooting was taking place.
But student Brandon Abzug said embattled Sheriff Scott Israel shouldn’t lose his job over it.
“I think he should definitely keep his job,” he said on CNN.
“We know about this one time where they dropped the ball, but we don’t know about the 999 other times where they did do things to save us,” he said.

“I’ve watched him on TV, I saw him at the town hall, I like what he’s saying, and I believe that he will keep us safe in the future,” Abzug added.
Israel is facing significant criticism for failing to act on tips about Cruz, and after four deputies from his office failed to enter the school as the shooting was taking place.
Over the weekend, Republican state lawmakers called for Israel’s suspension, citing his “incompetence and neglect of duty.”
“It’s very hard to keep one person accountable,” Abzug said on CNN Monday. “It’s a whole bunch of people.”
