Deval Patrick: I will not be the next attorney general

As soon as Attorney General Eric Holder announced his resignation on Thursday, rumors began flying that Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick would take the reins next.

The Democrat squashed those rumors, despite indications the Obama administration was interested in him, according to the Boston Globe.

“That’s an enormously important job, but it’s not one for me right now,” Patrick said at a campaign event in Hudson, Mass.

“I have no plans and no interest in making plans to be the next attorney general,” he said later at the Massachusetts State House.

The governor also told his closest aides that he will not be the next attorney general, according to an anonymous source close to the process.

Patrick did admit that he and President Obama had talked over the years about a role in his administration, “But I’ve told you before, I’m going to finish my term and then I’m going into the private sector,” he told reporters in Worcester.

Earlier this month while stumping for Florida Senate candidate Charlie Crist, Patrick argued that Hillary Clinton should face some competition in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016 — fueling speculation that he may decide to run.
