It appears Hilary had more stamina than Don.
While Tropical Storm Don broke apart in the Atlantic last week, Hilary has turned into a major storm and has been upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane.
Hurricane Hilary strengthened from a tropical storm early Monday over the Pacific Ocean and “likely to become a major hurricane” by Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said Monday.
An alert from the National Hurricane Center said the storm “is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph,” but is expected to pick up speed over the next 48 hours. It’s not expected to make landfall.
The Category 1 storm has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and is expected to move further out to sea as it picks up strength.
The National Hurricane Center does not name each storm. A list of one to two dozen names are used for storms in the Atlantic, Eastern North Pacific, Central North Pacific and other basins. The list of names is recycled every six years. In 2011, Hurricane Hilary ripped through the Pacific and later became a cyclone.
