X-Men comics to abandon their “social justice warrior” storyline

Comic book fans have become disappointed by the slow invasion of social justice warrior storylines and liberal ideas into their favorite superhero comics. Marvel Comics was ground zero for blending feminism in their graphic novels and readers were beginning to abandon their favorite superheroes.

Well, the comic book franchise X-Men is abandoning their social justice story line. Instead, they’re going back to saving damsels in distress and stopping mad scientists from blowing up the world.

X-Men comics’ new head writer Marc Guggenheim said in an interview with Newsarama on Friday that the superhero franchise was preparing for a relaunch. The caveat is that they wouldn’t be focused on the existential crisis of being a minority.

“There have been a lot of different X-Men relaunches over the years, and I’ve been reading along as a fan. What makes this relaunch different is that it’s more about the X-Men as heroes than the X-Men as a struggling minority fighting for their very existence,” Guggenheim said. “That existential crisis is tabled for the time being. It’s been a while since the X-Men have really been able to catch their breath and not worry about the end of mutantkind.”

In a separate interview, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Alex Alonso said that he hopes that more minority writers end up making comic books, but it’s not a corporate demand. “I’m the last thing from a social justice warrior,” he insisted.

The change of tone may make fans more willing to give their favorite comics another chance, especially X-Men, which has another movie based off the character of Wolverine being released in 2017.
