The Senate’s campaign arm declared that the people of Alabama determined that Republican Roy Moore is “unfit to serve” in the upper chamber after Democrat Doug Jones was projected to be the winner of the U.S. Senate special election contest.
“Tonight’s results are clear — the people of Alabama deemed Roy Moore unfit to serve in the U.S. Senate,” read a brief statement from Cory Gardner, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
The NRSC pulled severing funding ties with Moore’s campaign in November as the longtime judge faced mounting accusations of sexual misconduct with teenagers decades ago.
Meanwhile Gardner, who is charged with keeping the Republicans as the majority party in 2018, called on the Senate to expel Moore if he was elected.
As part of his statement Tuesday evening, Gardner, R-Colo., urged Jones, who will now represent a deep-red state, to vote with Republicans.
“I hope Senator-elect Doug Jones will do the right thing and truly represent Alabama by choosing to vote with the Senate Republican majority,” Gardner said.
