State Department to ‘celebrate’ anniversary of Abraham Accords

The State Department is honoring the anniversary of the signing of the Abraham Accords between Israel and a handful of neighboring Muslim-majority countries.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken will hold a virtual meeting on Friday with his counterparts in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco, the countries that signed the agreement a year ago, according to Axios.

“The event will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Abraham Accords and discuss ways to further deepen ties and build a more prosperous region,” a senior State Department official told the outlet.

This commemorative meeting is a public show of support for the crowned jewel of the Trump administration’s foreign policy efforts, and it raises the possibility that the Biden administration could continue to broker such agreements.

“We are thrilled to celebrate tomorrow’s one-year anniversary of the signing of the Abraham Accords between the state of Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a video posted to social media on Tuesday. “We also celebrate the agreement between Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco to normalize relations. We strongly support these agreements and look forward to advancing other opportunities to expand cooperation between Israel and countries around the world.”

“We also hope that as Israel and other countries in the region join together in common effort to build bridges and create new avenues for dialogue and exchange, we are able to make tangible progress toward the goal of advancing a negotiated peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” he added.

The Abraham Accords were signed on Sept. 15 by then-President Donald Trump, then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, the chief architect behind the Abraham Accords, warned that these agreements could cease if they “are not nurtured” during a Tuesday event in Washington to mark the anniversary, according to the Times of Israel.
