Bush questions Trump’s Christianity

On the same day Donald Trump was endorsed by an evangelical leader, Jeb Bush said he had his doubts over the billionaire businessman’s Christianity.

“No, I don’t know what he is,” the former governor of Florida said of Trump when asked if he thinks Trump is a Christian, according to a video posted by ABC News. “I just don’t think he has the relationship that he says he has, if you can’t explain it in any way that shows that he’s serious about it. Just accepting the fact that we make mistakes and you seek forgiveness. That’s one of the tenets of the Christian faith, that I think all, everybody can agree on. We’re all sinners.”

In the video, a reporter notes that Trump had previously struggled in an interview to name his favorite Bible verse, to which Bush responded that Trump “is playing this for political purposes, for sure.”

“For a guy who has stated he has never sought forgiveness, it’s hard to imagine how someone who is a strong believer would embrace that idea. There may be other reasons that Mr. Falwell is supporting him,” Bush said.

Trump is an avowed Presbyterian, who was endorsed Tuesday by evangelical leader and Liberty University chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. Bush identifies as Roman Catholic.
