Arlington County Board passes 2012 budget

The Arlington County Board passed a $1 billion budget for fiscal 2012 that increases funding for public schools and public assistance programs.

The budget also leaves the real estate tax rate at 95.8 cents per $100 of assessed value, the same as last year. However, property owners will still pay an average of $84 more on their real estate taxes because of rising assessments.

Some service cuts made in the past several years will be restored, including hours at county libraries and facility maintenance at county parks. Staffing at the Emergency Communications Center will increase.

County officials will  transfer $385.6 million to Arlington County Public Schools, about $25 million more than a year ago.

“This budget reflects the values of our community, values that the board articulated when we gave the county manager our initial budget guidance,” said Chairman Chris Zimmerman.
