Young Hoyas learning from string of losses

Surely it couldn’t be the same team that lost to Connecticut by nearly 60 points just one month ago.

The Georgetown women’s basketball team’s three-point loss to No. 17 Louisville on Tuesday was a game they desperately wanted and needed to win, but with just one senior, five freshmen and two transfers, but the young Hoyas (11-6, 1-3 Big East) will have to stash it away as another lesson.

“It’shard to compare this year to last year,” said third-year head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, who had just eight on her roster last season. “It’s hard to play with that few players.”

A couple carryovers remain, including top-scoring junior forward Kieraah Marlow (15.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg) and sophomore forward Katrina Wheeler, a Theodore Roosevelt grad and former McDonald’s All-American who’s pulling down 7.8 rebounds per game, including 11 against the Cardinals (17-1, 3-1).

Williams-Flournoy blamed Tuesday’s loss on a four-minute scoreless stretch in the second half, but the Hoyas still had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer — a far cry from scoring just 12 points while allowing 55 in the first half against the Huskies on Dec. 7.

“No doubt about that,” said Williams-Flournoy. “We’re definitely getting better.”
