Border Patrol agents witnessed smugglers dropping a toddler over a southern border wall on Sunday.
San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents observed a group of smugglers trying to pass a 2-year-old child over the 18-foot wall just before midnight, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. As they were handing the toddler off, he fell but did not sustain injuries.

The group of migrants trying to get across the border were observed on a remote surveillance system. Agents were dispatched, and upon further investigation, it was discovered that the toddler was dropped into the supposed father’s arms on the U.S. side of the wall. Both the father and the baby are citizens of Ghana with no legal status within the country.
“This event could have been catastrophic,” San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke said. “It is not only unlawful but inherently dangerous to cross the border anywhere outside of a designated port of entry.”

The number of migrants traveling to the southern border has increased since President Joe Biden took office, though it had been trending in that direction under the previous administration.
More than 100,000 migrants were encountered at the border in February, and more than 172,000 were encountered in March, federal officials said, and reports indicate an unprecedented 117,000 migrant children are set to enter the United States by the end of 2021.
