The letter former President Obama left on the desk in the Oval Office for his successor was “beautiful,” President Trump said Wednesday.
“So well-written. So thoughtful,” Trump told ABC News. “As a matter of fact, I called him and thanked him for the thought that was put into it.”
Trump said the letter was “long” and “complex,” and Obama “wants me to do a great job.”
The president has revealed little about what Obama wrote to him, saying Monday that he would not tell the press what’s in it. Trump told top lawmakers Tuesday that Obama wrote he would support an Obamacare repeal if it’s replaced with a better plan.
Trump reiterated that sentiment to ABC’s David Muir on Wednesday.
“He said, ‘If I thought your healthcare plan was going to be better than his plan, Obamacare, I would support it.’ And I believe he would,” Trump said.
Trump also spoke about what it was like riding to the Capitol with Obama to be sworn in as president.
“I said to him, ‘This is a little weird, isn’t it?” Trump said after explaining how vicious the campaign was.
Obama frequently criticized Trump while campaigning for his rival, Hillary Clinton, at one point calling him “unfit” to serve as president.
But Trump says they’ve moved past the negativity.
“We got along really well.”
