Alexandria suspends 68 taxi cabs

Alexandria suspended 68 taxi cabs — 10 percent of its total fleet — Thursday because the drivers failed to get their annual inspections.

City officials said it was an unusually high number of suspensions. Too many drivers waited until June 30 to show up to the inspection office, officials said.

The city suspended the taxis, prohibiting them from working in the city until they get their inspections, but allowed them to operate over the July 4 weekend.

City officials said the remaining 90 percent of taxis would be enough to provide necessary service while the 68 wait in line for their 15-minute inspections.
