White House condemns Burkina Faso terror attack, murder of American

The White House condemned terrorist attacks at a hotel in Burkina Faso Friday that left 28 people dead and another 56 injured.

“The United States condemns in the strongest terms the recent terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, and in the country’s northern region,” National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said a statement Sunday.

The Splendid Hotel siege, which began Friday, was carried out by Al-Mourabitoun, an Islamic militant group that claims affiliation with al Qaeda. The local group is believed to be behind another November attack at the Radisson Blu Hotel, which left 22 people dead.

The White House confirmed U.S. citizen Michael James Riddering was killed in the attacks. The administration is still working to account for all Americans who were in the West African country then.
