Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker sought to distance himself from Donald Trump as the GOP’s presumptive nominee on Tuesday.
Walker supported Ted Cruz’s presidential bid, but switched his allegiance to the self-proclaimed billionaire after Cruz dropped out of the race. Following Trump’s racial contention that a Hispanic federal judge might be biased against him on ethnic grounds, Walker has begun lamenting the possibility of Trump versus Hillary Clinton in November.
“He’s not yet the nominee,” Walker told 27 News in Wisconsin. “Officially that won’t happen until the middle of July and so for me that’s kind of the time frame that, in particular, I want to make sure he renounces what he says—at least in regards to this judge.”
Walker disavowed Trump’s most recent inflammatory comments and said, “It’s just sad in America that we have such poor choices right now.”
The governor’s decision to walk back his support for Trump comes after other Republicans piled on the presumptive GOP nominee and Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk retracted his decision to vote for Trump.
