Groundbreaking for new Niagara Falls train station

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer will be in western New York for a trio of transportation-related events, including the groundbreaking for the final phase of a new train station.

Schumer will join local officials Monday morning in Niagara Falls for the groundbreaking for the city’s International Railway Station and Intermodal Transportation Center. A construction contract for the third and final phase of the $41 million project was awarded to a Niagara Falls company in April.

City officials say construction at the site of the 19th-century U.S. Customhouse will take 18 months to two years to complete. When it’s finished, the transportation center will include a new Amtrak passenger station.

Schumer later heads to Buffalo and Rochester to push for funding for projects in the cities’ downtown districts.
