The View co-host Meghan McCain challenged 2020 presidential front-runner Bernie Sanders to “name one” Republican in Congress that he likes during his appearance on the show Wednesday.
McCain directed her question at the independent Vermont senator as he was answering a question from Joy Behar, who had asked him about the report that House Speaker Pelosi would prefer a “moderate” Democrat go up against President Trump in 2020.
“I have conservative friends who I like and respect,” Sanders said. McCain interrupted him to ask, “Any in Congress or the Senate? I’m generally curious about bipartisanship. Can you name one?”
Sanders responded by naming Republican Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, 74, who announced last week that he will resign at the end of this year. Sanders then pointed to the late John McCain as someone else who he liked.
“But they’re dead,” McCain pointed out. Then, as the senator began to praise former President George W. Bush, McCain asked him again if he could name “anyone in office, if you were president, that you would work with on the other side.”
“Lamar [Alexander] is not a liar,” he said. “Lamar is not a sexist, he’s not a racist, he’s not a homophobe. He’s a conservative guy.”
Sen. Alexander of Tennessee has already announced that he will not run for reelection in 2020, so should Sanders win the presidency, he would not have the opportunity to work across the aisle with Alexander.
