MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough fell for a fake Trump tweet from 2015 calling for a president to be punished if the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1,000 points in a single day.
The stock market dropped more than 2,000 points Monday in the worst day of trading since the subprime mortgage collapse in 2008.
Scarborough took the plummet as an opportunity to pounce on a screenshot of a fake tweet that appeared to have been written by President Trump back in 2015.
The tweet read, “If the Dow Joans ever falls more than 1000 ‘points’ in a Single Day the sitting president should be ‘loaded’ into a very big cannon and Shot into the sun at TREMENDOUS SPEED! No excuses!”
It was proven to be fake back in 2018 after Twitter user Shaun Usher admitted he created it. At the time, Usher said, “Not for a second did I think people would believe that to be genuine.”
It seems that Scarborough didn’t check the veracity of the tweet before he fired off the question: “What if it drops more than 2,000 ‘points’ in a ‘Single Day?'”
The Morning Joe host eventually realized it was fake when a reporter pointed it out to him on Twitter, prompting Scarborough to apologize for his mistake and delete his tweet.
Peter, thanks for calling attention to the deficit. I’m going to look up the articles right now. And thank you for calling attention to the tweet. I’m sorry for being less than mindful in my reaction. I was doing too many things at once and responded in haste. My apologies. https://t.co/peTFLPzHN4

President Trump also took a dig at Scarborough’s show Tuesday, calling it “Morning Joke” while congratulating Fox & Friends for its higher ratings.
Wow! @foxandfriends blew away the competition of Morning Joke (which did very poorly) on MSDNC (Another Comcast sleaze production), and @CNN’s New Day, in the Morning Television Ratings. A total blowout, but that’s what you get when you treat “Trump” fairly!

Fox & Friends earned its 220th consecutive month of highest ratings for a morning cable news show in February, raking in an average of 1.8 million total viewers. Morning Joe came in second place, with an average of 1.1 million total viewers.
