Autopsy report reveals gruesome details of Brian Laundrie’s death

A medical examiner released a 47-page report Monday on the grisly circumstances surrounding the death of Brian Laundrie, who authorities said claimed responsibility for killing his girlfriend, Gabby Petito.

The autopsy report, released by Florida’s District 12 Medical Examiner’s office, says 23-year-old Laundrie’s skeletal remains and personal effects were “in plain sight and scattered upon the dirt” when discovered by authorities about a mile from the entrance to Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. The report also lists objects found at the scene, including a “handwritten half note,” a wooden box with photos, and a small notebook, among others.

Laundrie’s remains were discovered Oct. 20 in the Florida park after authorities conducted an exhaustive search. While an initial autopsy report showed that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a forensic anthropologist conducted further examination.

FBI SAYS BRIAN LAUNDRIE CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR GABBY PETITO’S DEATH IN NOTEBOOK

The report says two slip-on shoes were located approximately 10 feet apart from each other. A “short barrel revolver handgun” and green shorts were also found at the scene, the report says.

The report indicates that a single bullet entered the left side of Laundrie’s head and that many of the human bones recovered had signs of “animal predation.”

The report also recounted an interview with Laundrie‘s parents, Christopher and Roberta, in which they indicated that their son was healthy and did not take any medications.

“When I asked about the decedent’s social history, Mr. and Mrs. Laundrie stated that they did not want to provide that information,” the report reads.

The FBI previously said Laundrie had claimed responsibility for killing Petito, 22, who went missing while the couple was on a cross-country trip last year, in a notebook found near his remains.

Petito’s body was found in September after a nationwide search, and it was determined that she died of “blunt force injuries to the head and neck, with manual strangulation” by the Teton County Coroner’s Office.

Laundrie was identified as a person of interest by authorities early on in the investigation but went missing before he could be questioned further.

On Jan. 21, authorities issued their final update in the case, stating that they did not identify “any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito.”
