Jim Williams: ‘Separation Saturday’ gave us good insight

It was billed as college football’s “Separation Saturday,” a day when almost all AP Top 25 teams faced off with another ranked opponent.

We had fantastic finishes with ABC 7’s Tim Brant (who is raking in the frequent flyer miles) and partner Dan Fouts calling the end of Oregon’s 34-33 upset of Oklahoma. On NBC 4 we saw Michigan expose Notre Dame’s defense en route to a 47-21 rout of the Irish. ABC 7 had what might have been the stunner of the day as Louisville crushed Miami, 31-7.

Primetime saw some great games with Clemson beating Florida State on ESPN with 8 seconds to go, 27-20. On CBS 9, Florida topped Tennessee in another thriller, 21-20. Over on ABC 7, Southern Cal continued to prove it doesn’t rebuild, it reloads. Just ask Nebraska, a 28-10 victim.

So what did we learn from “Separation Saturday?”

» Well, the ACCis not as good as the Big East. This week the Big East has two teams in the Top 10 while the ACC has none.

» We also found out that the Pac-10 is better than the Big 12 at the top with only Texas looking like a real powerhouse.

» Once again the SEC is far and away the top football conference, no debate necessary.

» Lastly, we found out Notre Dame and coach Charlie Weis are not worthy of a No. 2 ranking and finishing 9-3 or 8-4 is far more likely than seeing the Irish in a national championship game.
